Good Tired — The End of the Trail
I left home with the Santa Monica Pier on the horizon. The end of Route 66.
Yesterday, after 300 miles through the Mojave Desert, Death Valley, and LA traffic, I dipped my toes in the Pacific.
8 days.
2,000 miles.
That’s a lot of time in the saddle.
I am tired.
Each of us has a story. Some of us tell stories.
Singer-songwriter Harry Chapin told the story of his grandfather:
“…there’s two kinds of tired. There’s good tired and there’s bad tired.”
Bad tired can follow a day when you won other people’s battles, lived other people’s days, agendas, and dreams—and when it is over, there is very little of you in there. You toss and turn; you don’t settle easy.
Good tired can follow a day that you lost, but you fought your battles, chased your dreams, and lived your days. When you hit the hay at night, you settle easy.
I am tired… good tired.
This morning, I am up before the sun.
This morning, I turn right.
