I’m Michael Weinstein: rabbi, teacher, listener, occasional wanderer, and someone who believes that relationships are the why behind most of the things that matter.

I was born in Cincinnati, studied philosophy and Jewish studies at the University of Cincinnati, Christian theology at Xavier University, and found my way to Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, where I was ordained as rabbi in 2010. I’m now the Interim Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth El of South Orange County. Before California, I spent seven years as Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’m currently working toward a Doctor of Ministry degree, which means I continue to ask many questions.

The work I love most happens in relationships. Sitting with someone in a difficult moment, learning Torah together, helping a community find its footing, or sharing a good laugh over light conversation. I believe good leadership starts with listening, collaboration and that faith can make room for both: questions and joy.

Outside the synagogue, I’m happiest with a cup of coffee, good music, a funny movie, or a road stretching out ahead of me. I’ve ridden my motorcycle along Route 66 and along the Pacific Coast. I’ve experienced over 31 states on two wheels. Wanderlust and people’s stories make me hungry for my next adventure on the open road. Yoga and meditation help me slow down. My son keeps me grounded; Mose reminds me that being a rabbi does not make me the most interesting person in the family.
